Soap. Shampoo. Toothpaste.
Many people take these basic, everyday items for granted. But for some people, right here in our community these items are luxuries, passed over at the store for more essential items like food. Personal care items, such as toothbrushes, toilet paper and deodorant cannot be purchased with food stamps. Therefore, these items are often in high demand and short supply. In an effort to fulfill their promise, “to help people at all times,” Girl Scouts across north Alabama a are joining forces to collect personal care items. All items collected will be donated to local shelters and non-profit agencies who have clientele in need of hygiene items. 2008 marks the sixth annual April Showers service project. With the help of our community, Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama has collected and distributed more than 98,000 personal care items since the start of this service project in 2003. Benefiting from the project were homeless shelters, children’s homes, foster care programs, DHR, battered women’s shelters, hospice, and day shelters among others. Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama is collecting full or travel size items, but all items must be NEW. The following items are needed: shampoo (for all hair types), soap, deodorant, combs, brushes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, sanitary napkins, tampons, shaving cream, disposable razors, toilet paper, facial tissue, disposable diapers, baby wipes, baby powder, lotion, rubbing alcohol, peroxide, calamine lotion, and adhesive bandages.

Troops will collect items within their communities and all collected personal care items will be donated back to those same communities. A key element of the Girl Scout program is encouraging girls to develop the habit of helping others. This project allows girls to see that many people don’t have the luxuries of personal care products. During the month of April, Girl Scout troops across North Alabama will be distributing door hangers listing items that can be donated and pickup dates in local communities.
